Our Current Walking and Accommodation Areas in Dumfries and Galloway Region

Castle Douglas - A strategically placed popular market town, (pop. 3,800), themed as a 'food town' with many independent shops. The town sits beside Carlingwark loch and adjacent to Threave Estate with Threave House and the nearby iconic Threave Castle, set in the National Trust for Scotland's Threave Garden. There are various Estate, countryside, coastal and woodland walks with a short distance.

Newton Stewart - The River Cree runs from the Galloway Hills via Newton Stewart to Wigtown Bay. The market town has an annual walking festival and is again well situated with a museum and cinema amongst its attractions. As well as a river walk, there are several walks nearby at Kirroughtree and in the Galloway Forest Park.

The Solway Coast - The picturesque villages of Kippford, Rockliffe, Colvend and Sandyhills are all situated within a stretch of coastline known by the Victorians as The Scottish Riviera and now designated as a National Scenic Area. There are several excellent coast and woodland walks nearby.

Kirkcudbright - Standing beside the River Dee, the former county town of Kirkcudbright has a lot of history and is now themed as an artists town. It  is also a fishing port, with Maclellan's Castle, the Stewartry museum and several art galleries as attractions. Riverside, coastal and woodland walks are nearby.

Gatehouse of Fleet - The area around the Fleet Valley is another National Scenic Area being at the merge of the surrounding hills and Fleet Bay. Again a popular tourist area in the summer, a kilt making centre is one of the attractions. Several walks are nearby including the Cally Woods, which is near to the top hotel of the area.

Wigtown - Situated in The Machars region, the former county town stands beside the coast with views over Wigtown Bay and the highest hill, Cairnsmore of Fleet. It is the gateway to The Machars peninsula and several coastal walks.

The Glenkens - The hillside towns of New Galloway, the smallest Royal Burgh in Scotland and nearby St. John's Town of Dalry are part of the upland region knows as The Glenkens which has the linear walking route The Southern Upland Way passing through. As with the other selected towns, we know of some good accommodation and tea rooms. Our Accommodation List Below
